Confirmed -- I'd seen Athabasca Glacier in Matthew Barney's Cremaster 2. Granted, it looked much more crystalline on film. Now that I've been there, it's easy to tell where the chopper took off from:
That cluster of buildings in the foreground -- I think part of the Columbia Icefield Visitor Centre complex, is where the shot in Cremaster 2 begins, rising up over the glacier and past the two steps you see in the ice.
Also, no surprise, The Revenant was shot in Alberta.
The glacier water rivers that Leo got dunked in was less dramatically frosted in the frozen winter conditions, but it definitely felt familiar, between the rugged mountains and slow rivers on rocky plains. Makes me want to read the book. And avoid grizzlies even more.
